What's New in IBM Cognos 10

About IBM Cognos 10, my final feeling is that IBM has made a significant development and integration effort to provide a more compact, open and usable suite, especially for the less technical user who needs a quick access smooth and technological information from different sources.

By creating a workspace for the user - IBM Cognos Business Insight - provides business users a tool to select objects of different components of the suite, and even external data files, Excel, etc. to create their own interactive dashboards with any type of information handled by the tool. You can use Report Studio reports, analytical results of SPSS, IBM Cognos TM1 forecasts or even local data.

So, you can create your own vision of the business, with facilities for formatting, and scope for further linking to the final data interfaces with own tools where the information came from.

It uses also Google-based search engine technology, that allows to find all objects that might contain information related to the keywords you choose.

I have also shed some light on my doubts about the new collaborative options. Reports can add comments, and stores information about the author. Everything is indexed by the searching enigine. To interact, or learn more about the authors of reports or comments it links the collaborative environment of Lotus Connections, from where you can reference Cognos reports. To display information sources 2.0 style may also be used mashup services.

I remark also the integratation with SPSS, that is visible in the BI workspaces of Business Insight, and in the same Report Studio, where objects can be used to create reports SPSS predictive models, for example.

Other remarcable innovations are:

  • Portability and use of Cognos with more mobile devices, creating specific applications to use the module Go Mobile also iPhone and iPad
  • Possibility to create reports with monitoring indicators in real time
  • Ability to perform analysis in offline mode by creating reports and interactive dashboards with drill-down capabilities in file format. Mht
  • Utilities Data Lineage to easily find where the information came
  • Instant creation scenario 'What if' Cognos TM1, and create approval workflows.

Relating to performance, they announced a query response three times faster compared to Cognos 8, the previous version, as tested by IBM, and also the ability to deploy and use the suite in Cloud Computing.

Finally, to facilitate the migration process, IBM Cognos Lifecycle is a tool with a wizard that allows you to find differences between original and updated reports to new versions, and display them side by side to examine them before for it to adopt the new version. They commented that the migration of Cognos Cognos 8 to 10 may be similar in complexity to the migration from Cognos 7 to Cognos 8, and in tests with beta testers 90% of the reports can be migrated directly.

In short, I believe that IBM has made a big step with this new version. I appreciate especially the integration efforts to offer to the business user a workspace to understand, analyze, complete and organize all his own information that can help him to make better decisions.
